My principal interest is in luminescence phenomena and their application in Earth Sciences. Over the past 10 years I have carried out a program of synthesis of calcite combined with studies of their luminescence emission spectra. My work shows that there are potential applications of luminescence in low-temperature thermometry. In order for these applications to be realized it is neccessary to investigate the effects of coordination and chemical substitution on the luminescence exitation and emission processes. To this end I am presently engaged in a study of luminescence decay-times in my suite of synthetic calcite and their heated equivalents.
