Être fini vs. Avoir fini
Je suis fini = I am dead.
J'ai fini = I have finished
English: "good morning" does not translate to French: "bon matin" It in fact stays the same, and is "bonjour" whether you are greeting someone before or after lunch.
In French, the expression "to write a test" is not "écrire un examen" but is actually "passer un examen"
Did you know that in French there is no word for "shallow"? This is called a 'lacune'. The way to express shallow in French is simply: peu profond.
The French word sensible means sensitive, not sensible as you might expect. Therefore, it is a false cognate.
Fabric = tela, tejido
Fábrica = Factory
Pie in English means pastel in Spanish
Pie in Spanish (pronounced "peejeh") means foot
In Spanish "Me caes mal" means: "I don't like you"
However, a direct translation would result with "You fall me bad"
The Spanish false cognate 'el papa' does not mean dad unless it is spelled like so: el papá. Without the accent it means 'the Pope' and in the feminine form 'la papa' it means 'potato'!
The Spanish word embarazada does not mean what it looks like (embarrassed) - it actually means pregnant !
