Wearing academic dress

The academic dress consists of a cap, a black gown and a hood with a colour unique to each degree.

DO:

Your gown should be draped open...

DON'T:

...never pinned or clasped shut.

DO:

You carry your hood in your hand to your convocation ceremony. The hood will be placed over the neck, with the red and white side facing into your back, the black side facing out...

DON'T:

...never upside down or inside out, as illustrated here.

DO:

The cap should be worn with the V-shape in the front and the tassel to the side. Either side is fine...

DON'T:

...never directly in front or back of the head.

And just a couple of points:

  • The gown should fall just below the knee and the size is determined by your height.
  • The hoods are all one size for everyone.

Congratulations on your graduation!
