Primary Health Care Programs
This project aims to train primary health care workers for rural Vietnam and to enhance the capacity of the Vietnamese Secondary Technical Medical School 1 so that it will continue to train workers when the project finishes.
The program consists of nine courses taught during two semesters (classroom and clinical/lab practice) and two months of concentrated clinical experiences.
The nine courses include:
- Communication and Counselling
- Teaching and Learning
- Health Assessment
- Maternal-Child Care
- Mental Health Nursing
- Management of Common Conditions
- Primary Health Care I
- Primary Health Care II
- Management of Health Care Clinics
The first class consisted of 17 Vietnamese teachers who came from all regions of Vietnam and were taught by Canadian Nursing teachers, they were provided with monthly scholarships. They returned and worked in their respective posts. Those from STMS1 taught subsequent classes of PHC workers.
The project provided one Canadian teacher and one teacher assistant to teach PHC program in Hai Duong, Viet Nam
Participants in the second (21) and third classes (25) of PHC programs were nurses, midwives and physician assistants from the 45 rural districts of 3 provinces involved in this project. Following graduation they have all returned to work in their respective rural clinics.
