National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

NSSE 2014 is happening now!

The 2014 edition of the National Survey of Student Engagement began February 14. Students who have been invited to participate and who complete the survey will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift certificate from the University Book Store.

New for 2014

The 2013-2014 academic year marks the third time that Memorial University will be participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement. Unlike the previous two iterations in 2008 and 2011, this year marks a new format of the NSSE with the addition of “modules” that an institution can select to garner information on specific topics.

Almost a quarter of the old NSSE from 2011 has been removed with an equal amount of new material added.  Further details about the new NSSE instrument and the modules can be found at the following link:  http://nsse.iub.edu/html/survey_instruments.cfm

About the NSSE

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research on a yearly basis during the spring academic term. Typically, institutions participate about every three to four years to allow for proper data analysis and disemination. Memorial University participated for the first time in 2008.

The NSSE focuses on undergraduate student participation in programs and activities offered by the institution. The questions on the survey "represent empirically confirmed 'good practices' in undergraduate education."

The NSSE was created to accomplish two core objectives:

1. Refocus the national discourse about colled quality on teaching and learning;

2. Provide colleges and universities with diagnostic, actionable information that can inform efforts to improve the quality of undergraduate education.

Target Population

The population for the NSSE is all undergraduate first-year and senior level students. Definitions for what is meant by "First-year" and "Senior" students can be found here.
