Wireless Acceptable Use Statement
The use of network facilities falls under University Policies:
The Network Acceptable Use Statement also applies to all WLAN usage.
- WLAN is a “shared media” technology. This means that clients share the bandwidth of the communications media, which has considerably lower bandwidth capabilities from the wired network. Communications-intensive applications, such as large downloads or streaming video, will flood the media rendering it unusable. Especially in this shared media environment, users must recognize that all use of university-owned wireless network facilities necessarily impinges on other uses and that they must strive to maintain a reasonable relationship between the cost of the resources allocated to a given activity and the benefits likely to be derived from it. It is recommended that when possible, communications-intensive users use the wired network.
The University expects all users to refrain from the following uses:
- Servers may not be connected to Memorial's WLAN.
- Excessive use of communications-intensive applications, resulting in the overloading of the WLAN capacity, may result in being disconnected from the WLAN temporarily. Repeated occurrences may result in permanent loss of WLAN access.
The user of network facilities should also be aware of operational issues:
- The campus WLAN will use the WPA certification for security (Wi-Fi Protected Access - a grouping of wireless security standards that addresses the weaknesses of earlier standards such as WEP), with exceptions for special circumstances approved by ITS. The use of applications that provide encryption, such as Secure Shell (SSH) instead of Telnet for remote logins, and SSL-based secure websites where the option exists, are recommended.
- An appropriate ITS computing account is required to use the Memorial WLAN.
- Only the IP protocol will be supported on the Memorial WLAN. All IP addresses for the Memorial WLAN will be assigned by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service maintained by ITS.
Offenses will be dealt with in the same manner as violations of other university policies and may result in disciplinary action in accordance with existing Collective Agreements, Terms and Conditions of Employment, or the Code of Disciplinary Procedures for Students. In such a review, the full range of disciplinary actions available may be considered, including loss of network privileges for a specified period of time, dismissal from the University, and legal action.
