Windows OS Upgrade - FAQs

1.  How much will the OS upgrade cost me?

The cost to departments and units will vary depending on your current software license and hardware.

  • If a Windows 7 software license is required, the cost is $90.00.
  • If hardware is required the cost is usually $50-$200 but can vary. (Please note that the $90.00 Windows 7 license fee will also apply to hardware upgraded machines)
  • If a new system is recommended, the cost is $599.00.
  • In special cases, updated software will have to be purchased. C&C can assist in determining these costs for you.

2.  How long will I be without my machine to have the upgrade done?

Upgrades or system replacements normally take at least a day to complete. If a computer is picked up in the afternoon for example, C&C will back up the data on the machine, upgrade the operating system, restore the data to the system and typically return it by the end of the next business day.

3.  Will all my current software and peripheral devices like scanners and label makers work with the new upgrade?

In most cases, yes. However, sometimes compatibility issues are encountered. C&C will work with you to resolve the problem and/or recommend alternative solutions.

4.  How do I know if my machine is running XP or WIN7?

See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/which-operating-system

5.  Will my system require any hardware upgrades to run WIN7 and who's responsible for that cost?

C&C can assess your system and determine if hardware is required. Please note that any costs associated with hardware or software purchases needed to successfully upgrade a computer to Windows 7 are the responsibility of individual departments.

Information regarding software and hardware purchases related to the OS upgrade has been sent to administrative finance managers in all departments. Please take a moment to review the memo that was distributed.

6.  How do I know if it’s better to upgrade from XP to WIN7 or consider just buying a new system?

C&C can provide you with a recommendation. Contact the Service Desk at 864-4595 or help@mun.ca.

7.  Why do I have to have my operating system upgraded to WIN7 if I'm having no issues?

Microsoft has announced that they will no longer be providing support for Windows XP after April 8, 2014. This means that security patches will no longer be available and your computer will not be protected from newly-discovered threats. Once a system becomes infected, it also poses a risk to other systems on the network.

8.  Can I keep using XP if I want to?

To avoid the risk posed to other systems on the network, Windows XP computers on MUNet will no longer be able to access the Internet after April 8th, 2014. No other network restrictions are planned at this time. C&C does however encourage clients to evaluate their computing needs and contact us regarding Windows XP upgrades as soon as it becomes possible to do so.

9.  What if I need to run a particular software that is not currently supported under WIN7?

C&C can assess your system and provide recommendations.

Most people transition to Windows 7 very easily. The C&C Service Desk is available to answer any questions that you have concerning windows 7 should you run into any problems.
