Advisory: Phone based phishing scam

Computing and Communications wishes to advise clients of a new *phone-based* phishing scam confirmed to have hit St John's. As per details described here:

http://www.microsoft.com/australia/presspass/post/Microsoft-issues-warning-on-phone-scam

the victim will receive a phone call purportedly from Microsoft, advising him or her that their PC is infected. The victim will be directed to connect to a website which, if visited, will provide the attacker remote control over the victim's system. Opportunity to steal information or install further malware aside, the attacker will ultimately conclude by attempting to get the victim to pay for the "technical services" rendered during the call.

As per email, clients are advised to never provide their credit card or personal information in response to phone calls they've not initiated. Clients having questions or concerns about this notification should contact the C&C Service Desk at 864-4595 or help@mun.ca for assistance.
