The Department of Computing and Communications would like to advise MUN email users that we had service issues when sending email to Microsoft email services such as hotmail.com and live.com. This issue occurred from 9:00 pm, April 20 to 9:30 pm, April 22, 2010. Due to a recent phishing attempt, a MUN email user provided his/her account password to an unknown party who in turn used that information to take control of the account and send out over 30,000 spam emails. As a result of the volume of mail sent hotmail had tagged the mun.ca domain as a spam source and blocked most email originating from @mun.ca addresses. Our email administrators resolved this issue with the assistance of Microsoft support. Computing and Communications would like to remind MUN email users that we will NEVER request password or personal information be sent to us or to any other MUN technical team via email. If you have any questions or concerns about this service issue please contact the Computing and Communications Service Desk at 737-4595 or email@example.com.
