Native Trees and Shrubs of Newfoundland and Labrador

by A. Glen Ryan

This illustrated guide to Newfoundland and Labrador ’s trees and shrubs is an excellent resource for both the student and teacher. It is one of the few sources of information relevant to this province and readily available to all. Every teacher should have a class set for their students to use. Education programs at MUN Botanical Garden have incorporated this resource for many years.

Ryan’s drawings are clear and show the winter buds, leaves, fruits and other characteristics in excellent detail. Blooming dates, distribution ranges, and a wealth of other useful information is provided for each plant species. The non-technical writing style makes this book an ideal resource for the novice plant watcher. The illustrated glossary is another extremely useful tool for the beginner.

Ryan’s Trees and Shrubs is published by Parks and Natural Areas division of the Department of Tourism, Culture, and Recreation, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador , (St. John's, 1995). It is available for purchase from the Garden Giftshop. However, educators may receive a special educational discount from the publisher. MUN Botanical Garden has reproduced images and information for our website with the publisher’s permission.
