#1. Home Grown – Propagation Without a Greenhouse
Date: Tuesday, May 7, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Fee: $30 FOG / $35 public. Pre-registration required.
Instructor: Tim Walsh, Nursery Manager.
Description: In just two hours you gain valuable skills necessary to propagate your favorite plants. Join Tim in the classroom and in the garden to explore tried-and-true methods of producing new plants from seed, cuttings and division, followed up with a visit to our nursery for a behind the scenes look at our production facility. Please be prepared to go outside and wear comfortable walking shoes. Format: Oral presentation with demonstrations + a visit to the greenhouse.

Pruning
Date: Thursday, May 9, 9 am – noon.
Instructors: Carl White, Tim Walsh and Todd Boland.
Description: This workshop will discuss the how, when and why of pruning as well as how pruning can be used to direct plant growth. Specific pruning techniques for individual woody plant 'groups' will also be presented. Pre-registration required. #2. Director's HortCouture Series - Great Gardens, Part I
Date: Thursday, May 16, 7 – 9 pm

Description: Julie Andrews sang, "These are a few of my favourite things" in The Sound of Music. Join Liz as she shares a few of her favourite things: breath-taking gardens, their views and unique features, all showcased during visits with professional landscape association tours. This presentation will inspire you and your garden. When registering, you will be eligible for a discount for Part II). Format: PowerPoint presentation.

#3. Flower Pressing
Date: Saturday, May 18, 2 – 4 pm
Fee: $30 FOG / $35 public. Pre-registration required.
Instructor: Betty Hall, Friend of the Garden.
Description: Pressing flowers is a popular art form which can preserve your blooms year-round. In this workshop, material selection techniques, as well as when and how to press, will be demonstrated. Pressed flowers can be used to create a variety of projects; a follow-up workshop in the fall will demonstrate how to use the material to its best advantage. Participants should bring an old small book (not with glazed paper) and some tweezers. Format: Oral presentation with demonstrations.

#4. Explorer Roses
Date: Thursday, May 23, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist. Description: Most Newfoundland gardeners have heard of the 'John Cabot' rose. This is just one of the many Canadian bred "Explorer" roses. This PowerPoint Presentation will introduce you to these roses along with the Canadian bred Parkland and Morden Roses, and why these roses are the best suited for our local climate. The talk will cover aspects of their culture and subsequent care. Format: PowerPoint.

#5. Waking Up Your Spring Garden Bed
Date: Saturday, May 25, 10 am – noon
Fee: $30 FOG / $35 public. Pre-registration required.
Instructor: Carl White, Head Gardener.
Description: Get your garden ready for spring, even if there is still snow on your flower beds. Carl will briefly discuss several fundamentals of preparing your flower beds for spring planting, including soil amendments, dividing perennials, transplanting, mulching, etc. This walk and talk will take place in the flower gardens, so be prepared to go outside, rain or shine. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Format: Outdoor walk and talk with demonstrations.

#6. Spring Edible Plant Hike
Date: Sunday, May 26, 10 am – noon
Fee: $30 FOG / $35 public. Pre-registration required.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist.
Description: This introduction to native and naturalized Newfoundland plants that are edible will concentrate on the edible spring shoots. Please dress for the weather, including comfortable walking shoes, as this program, which includes a nature hike, will be held rain or shine. Format: Nature hike.

#7. Fruit Growing for the Home Gardener
Date: Saturday, June 1, 2 – 4 pm
Fee: Fee: $25 FOG / $30 public. Pre-registration required.
Instructor: Todd Boland, Research Horticulturist.
Description: Growing edible fruit-bearing trees and shrubs in Newfoundland can be a challenge. Some are reasonably easy, others more challenging. This workshop will discuss those types and selections which perform best in Newfoundland and hints on how to grow them to maximize fruit production. This course will take place indoors. Description: As part of the Rhododendron Festival, a PowerPoint presentation, followed by a walk in the flower gardens to look at specimens growing at MUNBG will be offered June 8 and 9.

#8. Making an Alpine Trough
Date: Sat., June 8, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Fee: $60 FOG / $70 public. Pre-registration required.

Description: The Newfoundland climate is very well suited for Alpine Plants and many gardeners have constructed some fine rock garden examples with large boulders on sloped terrains. But not all alpines need the hard work and space needed to grow these remarkable plants. In this three hour class, Tim will help you construct an Alpine Trough, plus teach you the correct soil, site and plant selection to adorn your creation. These "mini-rock gardens" make perfect garden features and come out large on the smallest deck or the grandest patio. Format: Hands-on (everyone will create and take home an alpine trough).

#9. Contain Yourself! The Art of Growing in Containers
Date: Tuesday, June 11, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Description: Join the hottest trend in gardening and learn best practices for growing plants in containers. Let Tim take you through the necessary steps in producing a container that's sure to turn heads. He'll cover container selection, soil type, plants, placement and maintenance. Don't let a lack of garden space leave you with a lack of color this summer. Format: Oral presentation + demonstrations.

#10. Gardening With Hostas
Date: Wed, June 19, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Description: Come learn about the fascinating diversity of the genus Hosta. When it comes to perennials grown for foliage, few can compete with hosta. They are suitable from full shade to full sun. Size can range from a few inches to several feet. There is hardly any place in a garden where a hosta can't be used. This workshop will introduce you to the variation that exists among the hosta, along with a stroll in the flower gardens to see our significant hosta collection. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Format: Oral presentation + a walk in the flower gardens.

The MUN Botanical Garden Winter Workshop Series 2012-2013 is offered in conjunction with Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador. All workshops will take place at MUN Botanical Garden, located at 306 Mount Scio Road, St. John's, NL.

The fee for each workshop is $35 for members of Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador and for members of the Friends of the Garden; $50 non-members. A continental breakfast will be served with each workshop.Register for two workshops in the series and receive 5% discount; 10% discount if you register for all three.

1.  Hot Pots for Cool Seasons
Date: Thursday, November 15, 2012, 9am-12pm
This talk on pots begins by using the principles of thrillers, fillers and spillers in a live design demonstration of a wild winter container. Inspirational, 'hot' show-stopping winter and spring containers to accent the entrance of your residence or corporate office will be featured. This presentation will spark your imagination to add colour and flare to your new pot design concepts and plant combinations.

#2  The Propagation and Landscape Uses of Native Newfoundland Plants
Date: Thursday, January 10, 2013, 9am-12pm
This presentation will introduce Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador industry members and home gardeners alike to the many native Newfoundland plants, both woody and herbaceous, that have landscape value in today's urban plantings. Suggestions on where in the landscape they may be used and propagation techniques will be discussed.
