Degree Requirements
M.Sc.
Candidates for the M.Sc. in biology must complete:
a minimum of two one-semester graduate courses. Additional courses may be assigned by the supervisory committee.
a research seminar outlining the proposed research project
a thesis based on original research
Specialization in marine biology (M.Sc.)
M.Sc. candidates specializing in marine biology complete:
four one-semester graduate courses, including 7531 (Biological Oceanography), and at least two of 7535, 7540, 7541, 7560, 7561 and 7570. The fourth course may be selected from any relevant graduate courses offered by the Department of Biology or other department.
a research seminar outlining the proposed research project
a thesis based on original research
PhD
General requirements for the PhD consist of:
any coursework deemed appropriate by the supervisory committee
a research seminar outlining the proposed research project
a comprehensive exam
a thesis
a public thesis defence
Specialization in marine biology (PhD)
PhD candidates intending to specialize in marine biology must have or acquire the equivalent background to a M.Sc. in marine biology. In addition to completing the general PhD requirements, students in marine biology normally take two graduate biology courses from the following group: 7531, 7535, 7540, 7541, 7551, 7560, 7561 and 7570. Depending on the student's background and area of research, additional courses may be required.
