Dr. Trevor Bell

How do you study a prehistoric culture when their land is buried under the Atlantic ocean?

If you’re geographer Dr. Trevor Bell you use multibeam sonar technology to help investigate submerged prehistoric landscapes and archaeology.

Dr. Bell co-directs the Northern Peninsula Archaeology and Palaeo-Landscape project in an effort to study how those cultures adapted to and impacted the social and physical environment.

With colleagues in Ireland and the support of a Coracle Fellowship from Memorial, Dr. Bell recently co-founded the Submerged Landscapes Archaeological Network.

The network is an international consortium of university and government researchers that is applying new multibeam sonar technology to the investigation of submerged landscapes and archaeology off the coasts of Newfoundland and Ireland.
