The Labrador Institute is Memorial’s presence in Labrador and a link to the local community. LI’s mandate is to support the local community’s engagement in research and to make regional research needs known to the university. The Institute works to identify research opportunities in collaboration with its board of local representatives, facilitates communication between researchers and the local community and carries out research projects in accordance with staff expertise. 

LI’s current engagement includes partnerships with the College of the North Atlantic and the Nunatsiavut Government, amongst others, working in the areas of natural resources, creative arts, and heritage. Ongoing projects include the Labrador Institute film collection which is widely used by community groups, the Sivunivut research project on traditional land and water use, and a series of books for children designed to promote the knowledge of traditional and Western science as well as Aboriginal languages.
