Description & Overview

Modern Germany is much more than Bavarian beerhalls, the Neuschwanstein castle, Lederhosen, and bratwurst. It is a country of contrasts – a tantalizing mix of old world and new, of fast cars and slow food, of modern dance and classical music, of war and peace. The Faculty of Arts at Memorial University invites you to step off the beaten path in May 2009 to discover 2000 years of history in the Rhine-Ruhr area of Germany. This locale, far from the tourist trail, boasts an extraordinary cultural landscape. You will walk in the footsteps of Germanic tribes, Roman conquerors, Charlemagne and medieval rulers.

Mining is a way of life just as fishing is. An entire day will be devoted to examining the connection between cod and coal and the rebirth of the Ruhr region, which was once the centre for German coal mining activities. Now a culturally booming area, home to six universities and nine colleges, the Ruhr region will be the European Union’s Capital of Culture in 2010.

Accompanied by Pia Banzhaf, a local of the Rhine-Ruhr region and a German language teacher with the Faculty of Arts and the Division of Lifelong Learning, participants will benefit greatly from her intimate knowledge of the area and vast international travel experience. Specialized guides will complement Ms. Banzhaf’s knowledge at each destination. From the heights of culture (Beethoven and Bonn) to the depths of depravity (National Socialism and Wewelsburg and Vogelsang), this is an extraordinary travel and educational opportunity not to be missed by anyone interested in the full breadth of human history.

Cost per person: $4900.00. For more information please view the payment schedule.

Registration is limited to 24 individuals, on a first-come basis. To add your name to the registration list at no obligation, email Chris Hibbs at goabroad@mun.ca, or call (709) 737 - 2152
