Our Priorities for Support

student

There is no shortage of need or aspirations among the talented students and diverse departments that comprise the Faculty of Arts (Social Sciences and Humanities).

We have, however, identified significant areas that require support so that the faculty can continue to grow and thrive in the coming years.

1. Our Students

Our students are our top priority.

Scholarships, bursaries and awards: Memorial offers a wide variety of awards, scholarships and bursaries to its students, many of whom rely on these to begin or continue their studies. Scholarships reward talent and hard work, and in some cases make the future possible.

Scholarships, bursaries and awards to fund international study: We want to bring arts students to the world and the world to the Faculty of Arts (Social Sciences and Humanities). In order to accomplish this, we want to increase the number and amount of scholarships available for international study, which enriches a student's experience immeasurably.

These students are an asset to the intellectual and cultural atmosphere of the university and benefit tremendously from international experience later in their careers.

Student Travel Grants: The geographic isolation of Newfoundland can be prohibitive to students looking to gain national experience, and opportunities to participate in academic conferences, summer programs and internships can be cost prohibitive. Supplements to travel would give our students the advantage they need to compete on a national level.

Fellowships: Support in this area is vital to our efforts in continue to attract, retain and reward the best and brightest graduate students from across the province, country and around the world.

Student success programs: ArtsWorks and new co-op programs offer the opportunity for career development, workshops, experiential learning and networking These programs showcase the value of an Arts education in real world situations.

2. Our Research

Our research informs our teaching, and helps build our understanding of the world in which we live. During the 2004/05 academic year alone, our outstanding researchers were awarded more than $3.3 million in research funds.

To maintain an outstanding faculty, and to ensure that they can continue to make a significant contribution to our province, country and world, we must support them through research and travel funds.

All gifts to the university are tax deductible.
