Artsworks Service-Learning

Level Two of the Artsworks Program provides students opportunities for enhanced learning through an eight hour service-learning component. This service-learning component involves a volunteer service activity that not only meets identified community needs but also connects to the students' area of study or interest and is then followed by a reflection on the value of that service. In the ArtsWorks program, the eight hour service-learning component consists of seven hours of volunteer work plus a one hour practical reflection session.

The service-learning component may be completed by volunteering with a community group on a regular basis during the term or by attending an all day service learning event such as Make Midterm Matter.

The service-learning component of Artsworks is done in partnership with the Student Volunteer Bureau and the hours of service count towards the Bronze Level Award of the Volunteer Incentive Program.

ArtsWorks has developed partnerships and volunteer projects in the past with several community organizations. Most recently, in Winter 2011, ArtsWorks developed a partnership with Beagle Paws, a volunteer not-for-profit group dedicated to increasing public awareness about beagles and to finding homes for abused, lost, or abandoned beagles. This is just one example of an organization we have introduced to ArtsWorks participants; there are plenty of organizations looking for volunteers. Check out the list of community organizations that the Student Volunteer Bureau has compiled; you can even search by your area of interest! Volunteering is a great way to do something good for your community and also develop skills that relate to your areas of interest.

Service-learning activities that are connected to students' studies can provide further understanding of program content, an opportunity to apply classroom learning, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. Experiential learning opportunities help students to enhance skills, to gain insight into an organization, to become familiar with a work environment, and provide valuable experience related to a student's chosen field. Service-learning opportunities can also foster understanding and awareness of diversity in our communities and develop leadership competencies. Significant personal, academic and career development outcomes may result.
