"I know what you want. You want a story that wonít surprise you.
That will confirm what you already know. That wonít make you see
higher or further or differently."
Welcome to NOVEL IDEAS, the presidentís report of Memorial University of Newfoundland for 2007-2008. The stories here tell of our commitment to ingenuity, of people who see things differently and learn by questioning conventional wisdom. Ultimately thatís what a university does.
Our own story is compelling. Founded in 1925 as a living memorial to our war dead, the college became a university in 1949. Today we are a dynamic institution with a growing international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and community service. Our outreach efforts are extensive and diverse, helping to solve real-world problems and realize the vast potential of our people and our place. This is indeed a story of heroic proportions, with an extensive cast of characters and exciting plot developments spanning more than 80 years.
My own story is simple enough. Iím a Memorial graduate, a mathematics professor, and, in a year of transition, Iím acting president at this wonderful university where we are adding important new chapters to our story. The work of our students, our professors and our staff benefits the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and beyond. As in any good novel, their stories are engaging and thought provoking. We hope you enjoy them.
