- Memorial University of Newfoundland unveiled an unorthodox approach to a new student recruitment advertising campaign. The campaign - Rant like Rick - is based on the concept of Rick Mercer's rant component of his show The Rick Mercer Report. Two TV ads have been created, featuring a male and a female, student each "ranting" about some of the factors that prospective students would have to consider when choosing a university. Mr. Mercer liked the idea and lent his name to the project. The ads were created with the university's new brand squarely in mind. The university recently launched a brand around the idea of "Become" and aims to highlight the university as a place of freedom, exploration and creativity.
- One of this province's best-known freelance arts journalists is the new editor of the venerable Newfoundland Quarterly, which is owned by the university and operates as a separately incorporated entity. St. John's-native Joan Sullivan replaced Dr. Linda Whalen in January. Ms. Sullivan is a well-regarded journalist with more than 20 years of experience. Her work has appeared in a number of publications including the Globe and Mail, the Telegram and the Current, and also on CBC Radio.
