Dr. Mohamed Hossam Ahmed

Assistant professor
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

Dr. Mohamed Hossam Ahmed
Dr. Mohamed Hossam Ahmed

Research
Dr. Ahmed's specialty is wireless communications. He works in the design of wireless networks and how to increase their capacity, how to enhance the quality of service, how to plan for new services and how to increase client satisfaction. For example, one area he is working on is how to apply pricing policies to new wireless services such as data, internet and video services in order to increase profits and efficiency. Dr. Ahmed is also working on designing admission control policies for the wireless communications industry.

Dr. Ahmed was attracted to Memorial University because it meant starting a new area of research here. "I felt that Memorial had an interest in starting a new research group in wireless communication. There is a lot of interest from industry partners here as well, which is also important in supporting new researching and new ideas. There is a good market in Newfoundland and Labrador because industry is going in this direction. It's unique because there are a lot of remote areas and this makes it necessary to have another technique for wireless coverage other than base stations that provide service to urban areas."

Experience
Dr. Ahmed received his PhD at Carlton University in Ottawa where he then worked as a senior research associate for two years. During this time, Dr. Ahmed was part of a virtual institute called the National Capital Institute of Telecommunications, which consisted of various universities across Canada and industry partners. There, he analyzed the performance of broadband wireless access networks. Prior to Carlton University, Dr. Ahmed received his masters in engineering in electronic communications (1994) and his bachelor of engineering with a major in electronics and communication (1990) from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt.

Background
Dr. Ahmed came to Canada from Egypt in 1996 as an immigrant and a PhD student. He joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science in April 2003.
