About the "Health & Safety Culture at Memorial University" Project

SafetyNet is working with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) unit of the Office of the Chief Risk Officer, Memorial University to assess the current occupational health and safety culture at Memorial.

"Health and safety cultureā€ is generally defined as the extent to which organizations and individuals are committed to working in a healthy and safe manner as demonstrated by their attitudes and their actions. Understanding how health & safety is viewed and practiced (safety culture) will lead to improved health & safety practices at Memorial.

The project includes:

  • Focus groups with Workplace Health & Safety Committee Co-Chairs (November 2017)
  • An on-line survey to be completed by all university employees (January - February 2018)
  • Focus groups with employees (March 2018)

The project is led by:

  • Dr. Stephen Bornstein (Project Lead, SafetyNet/Political Science)
  • Kara Arnold (Business Administration)
  • Alan Hall (Sociology)
  • Barbara Neis (SafetyNet/Sociology).

A summary report of the findings from the overall assessment (including focus groups) will be made available to the University community as soon as it has been completed.

If you have questions or need more information about this project please contact Dr. Stephen Bornstein at sbornste@mun.ca or 709-864-7245.
