Synergy Session: "Moving Downtown: How universities can re-use landmark properties"
Around the world, universities typically have a common physical presence and identity - freestanding campus or campuses often physically distant from the remainder of the community with the university establishing its identity, in part, from that physical configuration.
Currently, however, many universities are reversing this configuration by establishing additional facilities in closer proximity to the larger community. These additional, or satellite campuses, are sometimes part of a new or renewed districts and sometimes re-purposed landmark properties, while others see the development of a significant presence within a central business district, among a range of other scenarios.
There is certainly no 'one size fits all' for the success of such ventures, but with an increasing number of universities undertaking such projects, there are plenty of examples to glean best practices from.
Join Professor Mike Hefferan as he draws upon a wealth of examples from Australia to provide some lessons learned with attention paid particularly to how the interests of the university, business and wider community can be drawn together.
Professor Mike Hefferan is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) and professor of Property and Development at the University of Sunshine Coast, as well as Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology.
Prior to those roles he was, for a long period of time, the Executive Director for State Development in the Queensland Government with responsibility for regional development and many of the government's property assets and projects. These included major precinct redevelopment, a number of which involved major universities.
He has a PhD, Masters of Applied Science and postgraduate Management qualifications. He is a Registered Urban and Rural Valuer, a Fellow of the Australian Property Institute (API), the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD). He is immediate past president of the Queensland Division of the Australian Property Institute, Director of the Sunshine Coast Business Council and of Regional Development Australia, and is the Chair of the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre.
