Northern Peninsula Regional Workshop

Are you living on the Northern Peninsula and interested in your region's development?

Or, are you faculty, staff or a student at Memorial University who would like to strengthen Memorial's presence and make a difference in the lives of people on the Northern Peninsula?

If so, consider attending the Harris Centre's Regional Workshop on May 22, 2014 at the Haven Inn in St. Anthony from 8:30am-2:30pm.

There will also be a Memorial Presents public forum from 7:00-9:00pm the evening before the workshop. Dr. Jose Lam, professor of Business at Memorial's Grenfell Campus, will present Open for Business: The Role of Entrepreneurial Culture in Transforming Communities. A panel discussion with Maurice Simmonds, founder and owner of Maurice's Service Centre, and Ted Lewis, founder and owner of Holson Forest Products Ltd., will follow the presentation.

The workshop will focus on three key themes:

Assessing and advancing local infrastructure: What is the status of current infrastructure (transportation, communications, drinking water, marine, health, education, recreation, etc.)? What knowledge and resources are needed to sustain and advance community and regional infrastructure into the future?

Promoting regional collaboration: How can separate communities work together to plan and share resources for the benefit of the region? Can communities further cooperate in the planning and delivery of services? Are there more ways to build capacity on a regional, rather than community level?

Fostering business development and entrepreneurship: What is the role of business in the region, and how can individuals invest in ventures that will create benefits for themselves as well as others? What are examples of successful businesses, and what opportunities exist in various sectors? How can entrepreneurship be encouraged?

Please pass this on to anyone else who may be interested!
