Join Us! ForecastNL Presents "Climate Change in NL: Impacts and Actions"
What exactly do we know about how climate change is affecting NL, and how do we understand the impacts on our future? We know climate change is affecting the world, but what does that mean for our little piece of it? What are the specific risks for our environment and how might that affect our day-to-day life?
Join the Harris Centre as we talk to some local experts on these topics. We will be joined by Dr. Joel Finnis (Climatologist, Memorial); Dr. Ashlee Cunsolo (Arctic & Subarctic Studies, Memorial's Labrador Institute); & Ashley Smith (Owner & Managing Director of Fundamental Inc.). Each of our panelists will address various concerns of climate change, including but not limited to:
- What will happen to our Natural Environment? Ecosystems, coastlines, weather, ocean conditions, sea ice & permafrost – all of these will be impacted by climate change, and consequently, so will the ways we use the environment, whether for economic or cultural purposes. Agriculture, forestry, fisheries, subsistence, tourism and much, much more can all be expected to face changes as a result of climate change in NL.
- What will happen to our Built Environment? We can expect new or enhanced risk to everything we build, from houses to roads, wharves to entire cities. What can we do to mitigate and adapt?
- What will happen to us, the People? Climate change will have direct impacts on our health (physical and mental), as well as how we move, what we consume, and migration to/from the province. What else can we expect?
What can and should we, as NLers, do? What opportunities exist for NL? What needs to happen locally, and what needs to happen now?
