Harris Centre Awards Sustainable Northern Coastal Communities Research Funding

The Harris Centre has awarded $45,000 in research funding to three researchers to complete the following projects on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. The themes for this research fund came from the Our Way Forwardconference, which was led by Grenfell Office of Engagement, as well as consultations with a regional advisory committee from the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula. A fund evaluation committee comprised of local and academic members chose the successful research projects to move forward in the region.

Impacts of Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement on Sustainability of Northern Tip Coastal Communities
Jack Daly, Master of Arts student in Geography, will examine policy documents and use in-depth stakeholder interviews on the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula to contextualize and evaluate responses to the policy initiatives that are coming into place under CETA.

Feasibility Study on Innovative and Value-added Dried Fish and Dried Aquatic Products for Canadian and International Markets
Jose Lam, professor of Business Administration at Grenfell Campus, will lead a feasibility study to evaluate the potential of value-added dried fish, such as cod, squid, capelin, herring, mackerel, and other dried aquatic products for Canadian and international markets.

Grenfell's Gardens: Researching, Restoring and Re-telling the Story
Greg Wood, adjunct professor in Education, and Stephen Decker, lecturer in Environmental Studies and Geography at Grenfell Campus, will research the history of the farming enterprises by the International Grenfell Association in St. Anthony, while contributing to the re-creation of a small working farm enterprise.

These projects will advance the Sustainable Northern Coastal Communities initiative, which was funded by the International Grenfell Association, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to coordinate and enhance a suite of teaching, research, and public engagement activities related to the sustainability of northern coastal communities in the province. The Harris Centre, Grenfell’s Office of Engagement and the Labrador Institute are working together with community and regional partners to move forward priorities of the two pilot regions: the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula and Southern Labrador.
