Blue Box

The first Blue Box of the semester will be this Friday (January 31th) by Dr. Joel Finnis, titled 'Marine Weather, Forecasting & Fishing Safety'. Abstract is below. The Blue Box will be in SN2025, from 3-4pm.

Marine Weather, Forecasting, & Fishing Safety Joel Finnis, James Shewmake, Sara Rezaee, Barb Neis, & Ron Pelot Weather is a key source of marine risk, but relationships between fishing activity, safety, and weather remain poorly understood. Although quantitative analyses of environmental and marine incident data can provide insight into the relative importance of various weather risks, results often of purely quantitative studies are often difficult to interpret and lack context. Critically, the fit between available forecast products, fish harvester's needs, and harvester decision-making processes has not yet been rigorously assessed. This talk outlines a multi-disciplinary effort to explore connections between weather and marine safety in Atlantic Canada. Results describe fish harvesters as sophisticated forecast interpreters, who demonstrate a nuanced and contextual understanding of weather data, using a decision-making process roughly analogous to standard practice in forecasting offices.
