Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about professional development (non-credit), academic credit courses and training offered by Learning and Development.

Professional Development (Non-credit)

Where can I find information on professional development (non-credit) courses offered by Learning and Development?

 Visit Learning and Development’s website for a complete listing of offerings. Professional development courses/workshops are offered each semester.

Who is eligible to take a non-credit professional development course/workshop?

All eligible employees of Memorial University can apply for and attend non-credit professional development training to a maximum of $255 per semester.

How do I register for a non-credit professional development course/workshop?

Complete the Application to Attend Training form (see links below) and forward to Learning & Development, Human Resources. Please adhere to the deadlines for application forms as noted in course/workshop information.

How do I find out if my application has been approved?

Confirmation will be sent by email when you are registered for a professional development course/workshop.

Is there a fee for non-credit professional development courses?

Yes. Training fees are disbursed through a central University account administered by the Department of Human Resources. Fees vary depending on duration etc.

Can I cancel my registration for a non-credit professional development course/workshop?

Yes. 72 hours notice is required to cancel your registration. Please see the Guideline for Charges for Non-Attendance at Training Programs for complete details.

Will my department be charged if I do not show for training?

Yes. A program "no-show" fee will be charged to departments when an employee registers for a program but fails to attend. The amount of the fee will equal either the registration fee of the program or a prorated cost based on the cost of the program (including room rental, refreshments, and training materials). Academic Credit Courses

Who is eligible to enroll in a credit course?

Permanent employees, academic staff members, contractual employees whose contract (or series of contracts) is for a period greater than 6 months, are eligible to undertake one undergraduate or one graduate credit course per semester.

How do I obtain approval for financial assistance for a credit course?

To obtain approval, complete the Application for Financial Assistance for Memorial University Credit Course Form  and forward to Learning & Development, Human Resources.

Approval for all financial assistance for credit courses must be obtained prior to the semester for which assistance is requested.

  • The maximum fee for an undergraduate course is $255 per semester.
  • The maximum fee for a graduate and/or doctoral program is $486 per semester.

Training

How do I schedule a training program for my department?

Learning and Development offers individual and group training. If you would like a workshop/seminar tailored and delivered to your staff as a group, please contact Learning and Development and we will meet with you to develop and schedule a course that meets your needs.
