Update on the Course Evaluation Questionnaire (CEQ)

Administration of the Course Evaluation Questionnaire (CEQ) will be suspended until the end of the winter 2021 semester. At its April meeting, Senate passed a motion to pause activities related to the CEQ in light of a recent report from the Senate Committee on Course Evaluation (SCCE), which recommended a new purpose statement for the CEQ and the need to revisit the CEQ instrument and processes accordingly. A temporary suspension in the administration of the CEQ will allow time to consult with members of the University community and explore and develop ways to improve course evaluation at Memorial. Senate also approved a proposal from the SCCE to suspend the CEQ report publication site for students in self-service until the necessary work pertaining to the revised purpose statement has been completed.

Work has begun on the action items that follow from the revised purpose statement for the CEQ, and further information will be shared with the University Community as it becomes available.

Many instructors routinely use feedback methods to supplement the CEQ, and they are encouraged to continue this practice during this time. For instructors who may rely on the CEQ alone, or who may have unique requirements related to demonstrating teaching effectiveness, advice and support is available through the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL). The SCCE will work closely with CITL during the time of the CEQ suspension to provide guidance on measures and approaches for selecting, collecting and interpreting evidence of teaching effectiveness. For instructors who want to get started, consider the following CITL resources:
