My research interests lie primarily within the field of nonassociative algebra. I like loops, especially those which are Moufang or Bol. I like rings, especially those which are alternative or right alternative. Some years ago, I discovered that there exists a class of Moufang loops whose loop rings are alternative (but not associative), so one can ask the same questions about alternative loop rings which people have asked and are asking about group rings. In the mid 1990s, the late Dan Robinson and I found some (right) Bol loops whose loop rings satisfy the (right) Bol identity, so the interest in loop rings continues. Here are a few representative publications.

  • “Jordan nilpotency in group rings”, with César Polcino Milies, J. Group Theory 17 (2014), no. 4, 541--557, DOI 10.1515/jgt-2013-0053.
  • "When is a Bol loop Moufang?”, with Orin Chein and Michael Kinyon, Algebra Colloquium 19 (Spec 1) 2012, 927–946.

Over the years on the teaching side, my interests increasingly focussed on discrete mathematics and linear algebra and led to several books of which here are two.

  • Linear Algebra: Pure and Applied, World Scientific Publishing Company, 2013.
  • Discrete Mathematics with Graph Theory, with M. M. Parmenter, Prentice-Hall (New Jersey), three editions 1998, 2002, 2006.
