Graduate Programs

The degree of Master of Arts is offered in Economics. The focus of our program is applied economics. This non-thesis, course-based option is designed so that suitably qualified full-time students can complete our program in one year. The program starts each September. The first four "core" courses are taken in the Fall Semester and are followed by four "elective" courses that are taken in the Winter Semester. The final semester is occupied by our students producing a MA Essay. Prospective students can view a list of these courses offered for the 2016-17 below.

Graduate Courses - Master of Arts

Fall Semester
Economics 6000 Advanced Micro Theory
Economics 6001 Advanced Macro Theory
Economics 6002 Econometrics
Economics 6009 Graduate Seminar

Winter Semester
Economics 6011 Expenditure
Economics 6012 Cost Benefit Analysis
Economics 6024 Topics in Resource Economics
Economics 6025 Advance Labour Economics

Please note that the thesis option, while offered, is not recommended. Students normally take the one-year course route, which does include a substantial research component (the MA Essay, in the third semester). Therefore, applicants to the MA Economics do not need to select a supervisor prior to submitting their application, since this would only apply to those choosing the thesis option.

Students who are interested in our program can apply directly to the School of Graduate Studies (www.mun.ca/become/graduate/apply) or learn more about our MA program.

See the School of Graduate Studies calendar to learn more about our MA program.

Admissions and Financial Assistance

Successful applicants are admitted for September enrolment and are eligible to apply for financial assistance. Foreign applicants are strongly recommended to submit GRE scores and applicants (foreign and domestic) should apply no later than January 15. Late applications will be considered, however, the likelihood of financial support is reduced.
