Memorial University’s Sexual and Gender Advocacy Resource Centre (MUN SAGA)

Memorial University UC-6022 St. John’s, NL MUN SAGA provides a support and social group for lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, questioning, and other members of the Memorial LGBTQ+ community. Their office is a safe (and confidential) place to be yourself, hang out with other LGBTQ+ people, and meet new people! They also have a growing library of resource materials and LGBTQ+-themed fiction and poetry that is available to anyone who needs it.

Located at MUN’s University Center Rm 1009. Their volunteers are trained in crisis intervention and are knowledgeable concerning the multi-faceted range of issues. They are available for informal peer support and can provide referrals to various campus and community services. They have a Trans support group and an Asexual and Aromantic support group. Anyone needing a safe space, a confidential source of information, or simply someone to talk to is welcome to stop by!

MUN Student Union (MUNSU)

MUNSU also has two representatives that advocate for the LGBTQ+ community on campus. The Queer and Transgender Representatives advocate for the community as a whole by working with students to better policy and aid those who require it due to discrimination. The Trans Representative specifically advocates for the unique needs of the transgender community on campus either on a systemic level or with helping individual students with the issues they need resolved.
In addition to the Queer and Trans Reps, the Director of Advocacy can work with LGBTQ+ individuals who require aid due to discrimination based on being a part of a gender, sexual, or romantic minority.

The Binder Project

This project donates free chest binders to trans-masculine people when supply allows for it to lessen day-to-day dysphoria without draining the wallet of students as binders. Binders allow students better access to education and help transgender people feel more comfortable while trying to socially connect on campus.

A peer-based group that offers support to all who identify as trans, outside of the cisgender binary, or are questioning their gender identity. This group is made to be a safer space. They are a completely confidential peer-based support group, and together they decide when and where to meet, plan social events, and discuss where they want this organization to go.

The ACNL provides various services to people living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C, and also provides services to the general population of the province. They have a Gay Urban Youth Zone (GUYZ) Project which aims to increase knowledge and awareness about HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) among young gay men and service providers in the St. John's area. They have a 4-bed emergency low barrier shelter for homeless people at the Tommy Sexton Centre, and the rooms are private. They also offer a needle exchange service called the Safe Works Access Program (SWAP) which can be helpful for anyone in need of sterile needles, like trans-masculine people doing injections.

Receiving, recording and investigating individual’s written complaints that allege violation of the Human Rights Act. This is where people can go when they’re being discriminated against because they identify as LGBTQ.

Parents of Trans and Gender Diverse Kids – Newfoundland and Labrador

Parents of Gender Creative Kids-NL is a peer support group for parents of gender creative, gender questioning, and transgender children and youth in St. John’s NL. They meet the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 pm in the Janeway Resource Centre, in the Janeway Hostel. Parents and youth outside the St. John’s area can also join the meetings via Skype of Teleconference.

PFLAG offers a monthly peer support group that meets on the third Thursday of the month from 7-9pm, usually in the Landing at Memorial University’s University Center.

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood provides LGBTQ Support Groups, pregnancy testing, pregnancy options, counselling from a social worker, physician clinics, emergency contraceptive information, testing and treatment for STIs. They also have Camp Eclipse for LGBTQ youth.
