Fall 2020 COVID-19 Information
Availability for Fall 2020 (Updated July 21, 2020)
As the majority of students will be learning remotely, Student Residences will not be open in it’s usual capacity. On the St. John's Campus, Burton’s Pond Apartments are the only residence community that will be available. To help abide to public health recommendations each apartment will have a maximum of two to three students. Ideally, each apartment will have roommates completing similar academic programs in order to help reduce contact with areas outside of their apartment. At this time, both Macpherson College and the Signal Hill Campus will be closed to new and returning students this fall with an anticipated re-opening of January 2021. As of July 2020, we are anticipating that Paton College will be closed to new and returning students until September 2021. Paton College is a traditional-style dorm setting with residents living together and sharing many common spaces. It is not an ideal environment to help contain the spread of COVID-19. However, since the COVID-19 situation has been changing rapidly please be aware that all of these decisions may be revisited and changed based on public health recommendations, operational requirements and/or the current pandemic situation. Any significant changes will be communicated as they become available.
Students requiring accommodations for any reason are welcome to apply for the fall semester. Unfortunately, due to limited space we are unable to guarantee accommodation for everyone who may require it.
Please note that any student travelling to the province from outside of the Canadian Atlantic Province bubble (Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick) must abide by isolation protocols set out by federal and provinical governments. Canadian students are asked to refer to both the provincial COVID-19 site and the Memorial University COVID-19 hub in order to ensure that you are abiding by the proper isolation protocols once you arrive in the province.
International students are asked to connect with the Internationalization Office regarding travelling to the province for the fall semester. It is the responsiblity of the student to have an isolation plan in place.
Student Residences will not be open in the same capacity for the fall semester. However, we understand that some students will require accommodations for various reasons. If you have previously applied for the 2020-2021 academic year and require accommodations for the fall a new application for the Fall 2020 semester will be required. If you are a student in this situation please contact our office directly at firstname.lastname@example.org as there will be no additional application fees required for students who have already submitted a previous 2020-2021 application.
Students who have not applied for the 2020-2021 semesters are invited to apply for the Fall 2020 semester via the Student Residence Portal here. The application for Fall 2020 will be available starting on Tuesday, July 21 at noon.
Please note that for the Fall 2020 semester we cannot guarantee accommodations for everyone who may require them.
Student Residences is still accepting residence applications for the Winter 2021 semester. The COVID-19 situation has been changing quickly and at this time (as of July 2020) it is anticipated that Paton College will not be available until September 2021. Paton College is a traditional-style dorm setting with residents living together and sharing many common spaces. It is not an ideal environment to help contain the spread of COVID-19. This decision may be revisited due to changes to operational requirements, public health recommendations or the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. We understand that the uncertainty surrounding re-opening Paton College is inconvenient and challenging to many but these decisions are being made in the interest of the health and safety of our students and staff. Any changes to this decision will be communicated as soon as possible.
If you had previously applied for residence for the 2020-2021 academic year, your application was automatically moved forward for the Winter 2021 semester. If you have applied for Paton’s College, your application will be automatically forwarded to Macpherson College and further details will be communicated to you separately regarding this.
Room selection for returning residents has been completed (as of June 10th). Since we are anticipating the closure of Paton’s College until September 2021, a process is being developed to accommodate any students who have already selected rooms in a Paton College building. These details will be communicated individually with impacted students. Information regarding room selection for new students will be communicated once the process is finalized.
Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and residence re-openings, confirmation and cancellation fees will be waived for the 2020-2021 academic year. The $40 application fee remains in place as this fee is used to fund as residence life programming throughout the year. Any overages in that fund is used in the following year.
