In Fall 2009, the Department of Psychology, in collaboration with the Counselling Centre, began offering a graduate program in clinical psychology that leads to the degree of Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). The goal of the Psy.D. program is to offer comprehensive, high-level training in the practice of clinical psychology that will help to address not only the provincial need but also the need reported across Canada for well-trained doctoral level clinical psychologists. In the Psy.D. model, the emphasis is on developing strong and knowledgeable professionals who understand and are educated consumers of research but may not necessarily produce original research as a primary part of their career path. Psy.D. Mission Statement and Training Model
Based upon the scholar-practitioner model, the PsyD program trains doctoral-level clinical psychologists to practice in a wide range of settings through intensive course work and supervised experience. The clinical generalist training model provides students with a broad and flexible foundation of knowledge and skills in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of psychological disorders, as well as in the promotion of overall health. Integration of clinical and research skills prepares students for a practice which incorporates research and is responsive to research findings.
Psy.D. Training Philosophy
1. Scholar-Practitioner Model: The goal of the PsyD program is to promote an integration of research and practice by fostering the development of clinical psychologists for whom research and practice are not rigidly distinct activities. The aim is to teach students to become practitioners who are skilled in using research findings to inform their clinical practice. This includes both the incorporation of new evidence into practice as well as active involvement in clinical research activities such as program development and evaluation and analysis of case studies.
2. Generalist Training: Our goal is to prepare clinical psychologists for practice in a wide range of professional settings and in a rapidly changing scientific and human services environment. A clinical generalist program provides students with a broad and flexible foundation of clinical and research skills. Generalist training allows for opportunities to gain experience working with clients across the lifespan, with couples, families, and community groups, and also with clients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The PsyD Program serves the needs of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador generally, and training includes a focus on issues related to meeting the mental health needs of individuals and groups from diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in both rural and urban communities. Exposure to a variety of theoretical viewpoints is emphasized and students are exposed to a number of theoretical perspectives, including cognitive- behavioral, interpersonal, psychodynamic, developmental, and family systems.
Students will only be admitted to the program on a full-time basis. Applicants are required to have an undergraduate Honours degree in Psychology including an honours thesis. Masters preferred.
Students are expected to have successfully completed undergraduate courses in each of the following areas:
- Abnormal psychology
- Developmental psychology
- Neuroscience (Biological Psychology)
- Learning (Behaviour modification)
- Social psychology
- History of Psychology
- Research design
Note: Students with Master's level degrees who wish to be considered for the program must have completed an undergraduate Honours degree in Psychology, and have fulfilled the undergraduate course requirements described above.
