Jazz Ensemble Audition Materials - 2020
Welcome and welcome back to the School of Music at Memorial University! Every fall, all music students audition for placement in large ensembles. In addition to the wind ensemble, orchestra, and choirs, MUN has a very active Jazz Ensemble. For those of you interested in learning the language of jazz in a classic big band setting, I welcome you to audition for this year’s Jazz Ensemble.
With the fall semester being online only we will not be able to rehearse in person this time. Instead we will focus on the development of individual parts and style specific skills and will create a layered audiovisual recording together. If the situation allows for it the ensemble will go back to in-person rehearsals in the winter term.
Please watch this video message for further details.
We welcome video auditions on any of the following instruments by current music students, students in other faculties, and community members.
Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone
Trombone, Bass Trombone
Upright Bass, Piano, Guitar, and Drums
Vocals (admission will be deferred until in-person rehearsals are possible again)
Successful candidates will be guaranteed their spot for the full academic year.
Audition videos will have to be submitted by Friday, September 4th 11:59pm Newfoundland Time.
To submit your audition video please log in to Brightspace and select "Ensemble Auditions". You will find a tab for "Jazz Ensemble" with a video upload tool. If you do not have access to Brightspace or cannot find the "Ensemble Auditions" shell, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
You will find PDFs of the excerpts for your instrument contained in the links below. If there are multiple excerpts please prepare all of them. Please prepare the complete excerpts unless noted otherwise. Please make sure to set your recording device to the best possible audio quality and use external mics or audio recorders if available. Please record your excerpts unaccompanied and without a metronome.
It is in your best interest to seek out recordings of the music to get a sense of tempo and character.
If you have any questions about the jazz ensemble auditions feel free to contact me at email@example.com.
