Jazz Ensemble Audition Materials - 2019

Dear Students,

Welcome and welcome back to the School of Music at Memorial University! Every fall, all music students audition for placement in large ensembles. In addition to the wind ensemble, orchestra, and choirs, MUN has a very active Jazz Ensemble. For those of you interested in learning the language of jazz in a classic big band setting, I welcome you to audition for this year’s Jazz Ensemble. We will play a Latin Jazz program in the fall and contemporary Jazz in the winter semester.

The Jazz Ensemble rehearses Tuesdays 5:30 - 6:45pm and Fridays 4:00 - 5:15pm. We welcome auditions on any of the following instruments by current music students, students in other faculties, and community members.

Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone
Trombone, Bass Trombone
Bass (electric and upright), Piano, Guitar, and Drums
Auxiliary Percussion (fall semester only)

The auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 3rd.

For saxophonists, trumpet, and trombone players, you will only do one large ensemble audition that includes orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz ensemble, and your sign-up sheet will be posted outside Professor Bill Brennan’s office (MU 2003). The times are:

All first year brass and woodwind players 9:15-10:15 am, Suncor Hall
Saxophone 11:15-11:45 pm, Suncor Hall
Trumpet 1:00-1:35 pm, MU 1034
Low Brass 1:35-2:30 pm, MU 1034

For rhythm section players (bass, piano, guitar, and percussion), vocalists and anyone who is not taking the general ensemble audition above, there will be a separate audition for Jazz Ensemble and a sign up sheet will also be outside Professor Brennan’s office (MU 2003). If you are auditioning for multiple instruments please sign up for 2 slots.

The available times slots are:
Drums and Aux. Percussion 3:30-4.30pm MU 1034
Anyone else not covered above 10:15am-11:15am, 12:00pm-1pm MU 2015

You will find PDFs of the excerpts for your instrument contained in the links below. If there are multiple excerpts please prepare all of them. Bassists will ideally be able to play both electric and upright bass.

It is in your best interest to seek out recordings of the music to get a sense of tempo and
character. For rhythm section instruments there will be an additional short sight reading test.
