iPhone Passwords - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is Computing and Communications implementing passwords on university iPhone's?

A: Primarily to protect any personal information that may be contained on such devices as required by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador ATIPPA legislation. In the event of such a device being lost or stolen, the presence of a secure password policy will protect any data contained on the device.

Q: When will the new password policy go into effect?

A: Computing and Communications implemented a centrally managed iPhone password policy on Monday March 28th, 2011.

Q: What will I see because of the password policy?

A: The iPhone will lock itself automatically once the security timeout has elapsed (a maximum of 15 minutes). You do not need to unlock your iPhone to answer phone calls, but you must unlock the iPhone to place an outgoing call.

Q: Can I disable the password requirement?

A: No, this policy is a requirement, and cannot be disabled by the end-user. Please follow the link here to Memorial's Electronic Data Security Policy.

Q: What are the password requirements?

A: Password must be a minimum length of 6 characters, and contain a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Q: Can I adjust the security time out?

A: Yes, the security timeout can be set to apply immediately or delay up to 15 minutes (this is the maximum value).

Q: What happens if I forget my password?

A: Computing and Communications can assist with a password reset, which will require that the device be reset to default factory settings.

Q: What happens if I get my password wrong 10 times in a row?

A: If the device sees 10 failed attempts in a row, the iPhone will reset to the factory default settings, erasing all content and custom configuration from the device.

In the event of a reset, it is recommended that you use Apple iTunes to perform regular back ups of your iPhone. A "Back Up" will allow you to easily restore the custom configuration to your device. As well, the "Transfer Purchases" option will back up device content, such as music and apps. Finally, "Syncing" allows for the easy transfer of content between your iPhone and computer.
