What is Voice over IP (VoIP)?

Voice over IP (VoIP) transmits voice communications over the data network infrastructure. Simply put, it is a way of utilizing our network for telephone conversations, in addition to its traditional uses.

What are the benefits?

There are numerous benefits.

VoIP is the future of telephony. This state-of-the-art system will enable Memorial University to build a strong foundation for the future. The VoIP system transmits both voice and data over a single network infrastructure, thereby allowing the University Community to benefit from integrated management and operations, more functional phone sets, streamlined services, and other enhanced features.

Since VoIP uses converged network technology, the cost savings are significant when compared to developing and maintaining separate voice and data networks. Costs will be controlled as the number of lines rented through Rogers will be greatly reduced. Voice and data cabling and relocation charges will also be lowered.

We will have the ability to manage our phone system, and access to more features and more applications. VoIP is digital, so it may offer features and services that are not available with a traditional phone.

Will long distance calling change?

Placing outbound calls will not change. This includes calls to long distance destinations. Our long distance provider is currently Allstream and this will not change. Long distance charges therefore will still apply at the current rates.

Will VoIP affect my PC?

No. The voice data and network data are on two separate virtual local area networks. However, your PC network cable can be plugged into your phone.

Will my phone work during a power failure?

ITS is committed to maintaining voice services in all circumstances. All VoIP phones are backed by UPS battery which will provide power for a limited amount of time during a power failure. The exact uptime will vary, depending on your location and power consumption of pc's and phones in your area. ITS is committed to providing a minimum of 15 minute uptime following a power outage under worst case circumstances. Many locations are equipped with generator power to provide phone service for longer periods. Locations without a backup generator have emergency phones located in central areas such as general offices that will function during a power outage. Signage has been installed within those buildings to identify those locations.
