C&C is taking out the trash

Many of us have accidentally deleted an email message and have been able to recover it by finding it in the trash folder. But much like the name implies, the trash folder needs to be cleared out from time to time.

C&C estimates that about 20 per cent of all our email disk storage is consumed by trash folders that have become long-term repositories for deleted email. In some cases, people who report that they have exceeded their email quota find that they need only empty their trash folder to remedy the situation.

In order to limit the impact of trash folders on our email resources, C&C will be implementing an automatic purging of messages that have been in the trash folder for more than 14 days. This change will take effect Sept. 19, 2011.

Webmail periodically offers to "perform maintenance" on startup, which is its expression for purging old messages from the trash folder. If you are in the habit of skipping this step, please consider running it the next time you are prompted.

Clients who have questions or concerns about this change are encouraged to contact the C&C Service Desk at 864-4595 or help@mun.ca.
