Welcome (Back) International Students

We are delighted that you have chosen Memorial University to further your education. It is our hope that we can welcome you virtually (and in-person if the necessary conditions are met) during the 2020-2021 academic year to help support your studies.

Important Notices - Please Read Before Proceeding

Notice for Students travelling from NS, NB and PEI

Part of the arrivals process to Newfoundland and Labrador involves a minimum 14-day self-isolation period. Since July, travellers coming from one of the Atlantic Provinces (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick) were exempt from the self-isolation requirement if they showed no signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

However, on Monday, November 23rd, it was announced that Newfoundland and Labrador will temporarily withdraw from the "Atlantic Bubble." This will be in effect until Wednesday, December 9th, 2020, subject to review.

This means that ALL students (new, returning, domestic, international) travelling from outside the province of Newfoundland and Labrador must self-isolate upon returning to the province.

These students must also complete the forms through this site to inform the institution of your travel so that we may support you in the mandatory self-isolation period.

November, 2020 - ArriveCAN Application Usage Mandatory

As of November 21, 2020, travellers coming to Canada by air will be required to use the ArriveCAN before they board their flight. They will need to provide travel and contact information, a quarantine plan, and a COVID-19 symptom self-assessment.

Travellers will need to be ready to show their ArriveCAN receipt when seeking entry into Canada; a border services officer will verify that they have submitted their information digitally. Before this time air travellers can expect to be reminded by their air carrier of the need to submit COVID-related information digitally through ArriveCAN prior to boarding their flight to Canada.

As of November 21, 2020, travellers will be required to confirm within 48 hours that they have arrived at their place of quarantine or isolation and those in quarantine must complete a daily COVID-19 symptom self-assessment during their quarantine period. They will be able to submit information through the ArriveCAN app or by calling a toll-free number (1-833-641-0343). [full press release   |  access ArriveCAN app]

October, 2020 - New Rules for Entering Canada For Studies

As of October 20th, 2020 it may be possible to return to Newfoundland and Labrador to commence or continue your studies. The Government of Canada has updated regulations regarding international student travel to Canada.

Memorial University is now on the official list of designated learnings institutions (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 isolation plan for student arrivals. This means that if you meet all of the criteria to leave your home and enter Canada, we will be able to facilitate your entry to Newfoundland and Labrador and subsequent mandatory self-isolation period.

July, 2020 - Online (Remote) Delivery of Class to Continue through Winter 2021

For the Fall Semester, 2020 and the Winter Semester, 2021, classes will take place in a primarily remote and online teaching and learning environment. This means that you will have the option to start or continue your Memorial University education from the comfort of your home wherever you are in the world.

It is important to note that unless you have been expressly advised by your department (supervisor), faculty or school, you are not expected to travel to Newfoundland and Labrador to commence or continue your studies in fall 2020 or winter 2021. The Government of Canada international travel ban remains in place at this time.

Memorial’s main priorities are to ensure that all current students are able to successfully progress through their programs, and that all new students have the best possible start to their academic experience at Memorial, despite the challenges associated with ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.
