Regulations for MPE
The Master of Physical Education is offered by full-time and part-time study. There are two options in the program: (1) thesis route or (2) coursework and comprehensive exam route. Theses route students shall normally be required to be on campus while the coursework route is offered completely online. (Please note: international students applying for the coursework option will not be able get a study permit since you do not have to travel to Newfoundland to complete the degree requirements)
Qualifications for Admission
- Admission is limited and competitive. The deadline for receipt of applications is April 1 for admission into the subsequent Fall semester. To be considered for admission an applicant shall normally hold a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, or a related discipline, with at least second class standing, from an institution recognized by Senate. In addition to the above, preference will be given to applicants with work experience, obtained either through Cooperative Education programs or through employment deemed appropriate.
- Any other applicant who holds a Bachelor of Physical Education or Recreation and Leisure Studies Degree or its equivalent may be considered for admission provided that:
- the applicant's undergraduate record after the first year shows an average of at least grade B in physical education and/or recreation and leisure studies courses, OR
- the applicant has raised his/her overall academic standing to second class following the completion of the undergraduate degree, through the successful completion of an approved pattern of undergraduate courses.
- Only in exceptional circumstances and only on the recommendation of the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation shall the Dean of Graduate Studies consider applicants who do not meet these admission requirements.
Program of Study and Research
As previously noted, the Degree of Master of Physical Education is offered under two options:
The program shall consist of a minimum of 12 credit hours in graduate courses (HKR 6000 or 6001, plus three other courses to be determined in conjunction with the student’s thesis supervisor) plus a thesis. The thesis shall be on an approved subject in which systematic research has been conducted by the candidate under the direction of the Supervisor. All thesis route students will also complete HKR 6314 (a non-credit, repeatable course) in four semesters (fall and winter of the first 23 months) during their tenure in the program.
The program shall consist of a minimum of 24 credit hours in graduate courses (HKR 6500, plus seven other courses to be selected from the HKR offerings. Students can take up to two non-HKR courses with permission from the AD) plus a comprehensive examination in the candidate's major area of study. The comprehensive exam can only be written upon successful completion of all required courses.
