Immigration Research Fund

Please note:

Funding for this program has been halted until further notice. Please click here to review our other funds for potential eligibility.

The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development has established a fund for research projects dealing with two broad themes:

  • How can the number of immigrants to Newfoundland and Labrador be increased?
  • How can the province retain those immigrants which have been attracted here?

The research projects must have practical application for Newfoundland and Labrador. Information about possible research topics may be found on the Harris Centre’s website by clicking here.

Only faculty members at Memorial University are eligible to apply for funding (including sessional, adjuncts and retired). The maximum grant amount is $15,000, and successful applicants will receive 50% of the amount requested up-front, a further 30% at the mid-point of the project, and the final 20% upon receipt of the final report. Eligible activities include undertaking primary research (focus groups, surveys, field observations, etc.), purchasing of data sets, hiring research assistants, purchasing equipment essential to the project, travel to carry out research, and other activities essential to carrying out the project. If partnering with non-governmental organizations and clients, proposals should describe the potential impacts on these groups or individuals; costs associated with working with such organizations (e.g., identification of study subjects, participation in focus groups or surveys, etc.) are eligible and must be included in the proposal where appropriate. Travel to attend conferences and the purchasing of reference materials are not eligible activities.

Proposals will be reviewed on a competitive basis by a committee comprised of one representative from each of: Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Harris Centre, the Coordinating Committee on Newcomer Integration and the research community at Memorial University.

Funding for this initiative is generously provided by the Newfoundland and Labrador office of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
