New Director of Faculty Relations

Morgan Cooper has been appointed director of Faculty Relations effective April 14. Mr. Cooper has a B.Comm. (honours) from Memorial, a Masters of Industrial Relations from U of T and a law degree from Dalhousie.

He has a long-standing relationship with Memorial as a former faculty member with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on the subjects of labour relations, collective agreement administration and labour law.

Apart from his prior service at Memorial, Mr. Cooper served for many years as a labour arbitrator on an ad hoc basis and he has held roles as vice-chair and chair of the Labour Relations Board of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Mr. Cooper has also conducted inquiries and prepared reports for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on labour relations processes in relation to the construction, fabrication and operations of offshore oil and gas projects.

Mr. Cooper comes to Memorial from a regional law firm where he has practised law for the past five years, advising employers on the application and interpretation of collective agreements and advocating for employers before tribunals and courts on a wide range of employment and labour matters.
Mr. Cooper is an elected bencher of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and an elected director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Employer’s Council.

The Office of Faculty Relations is responsible for the negotiation and administration of collective agreements for over 1300 university employees including all faculty, librarians, co-operative education co-ordinators and per course instructors at Memorial.

The office is responsible for all labour relations matters arising out of the university’s collective bargaining relationship with MUNFA and LUMUN, including grievance and arbitration proceedings and labour relations board matters.
