Welcome

Scale. Our understanding of our environment depends on spatial and temporal scale. The central and continuing theme of my research career has been uncovering scale dependent patterns, then seeking out the processes responsible for those patterns.

Juvenile Cod Biology. There is a growing recognition that abundance and year class strength of fish with pelagic eggs and larvae can be substantially altered by mortality during the post settlement juvenile stage. The research focus has been to develop an understanding of the degree to which survival depends on patterns of food supply and use of shelter to reduce the risk of predation.

Benthic Ecology. The seafloor is the source of nutrients that support marine ecosystems; it is also where anthropogenic pollutants accumulate. The research focus here has shifted from an understanding of pattern and process to developing science based programs to monitor predicted effects of contaminants on the seafloor ecosystem.

Marine Ornithology Marine birds are the most visible inhabitants of the open ocean; our understanding of their behaviour and population biology is unparalleled compared to other marine organisms. The research focus here has been to use marine birds to develop a better understanding of marine ecosystems.
