I have an upcoming trip outside of Canada to a location that is not on the active travel alert, should I cancel “just in case”?
Yes, currently all university-related travel is suspended. Memorial is carefully monitoring the rapidly evolving situation. Any changes will be communicated quickly to the Memorial community.
I am planning a field trip with students to a location outside of Canada which is not on active travel alert – should I cancel?
Yes, cancel. At this point we are not sure when the travel suspension will be lifted so providing advice on postponement is not possible.
I have personal travel planned (ie, a flight booked to return home for the summer). Will I be allowed to travel?
Memorial has suspended university-related travel only. However the Government of Canada has issued an official global travel advisory is in effect: Avoid non-essential travel outside Canada until further notice. Check with Travel Advice and Advisories for more information.
If you intend to make an international trip for personal reasons (ie, to return to your home country, etc) you are advised to research and make your own decisions around what happens if your destination country or transit countries suspend international flights or shut down completely. Note that many countries are now implementing self-quarantine or self-monitoring for all new international arrivals: https://www.iata.org/en/programs/safety/health/diseases/government-measures-related-to-coronavirus/.
Do your research to ensure coverage by both trip insurance and emergency health insurance. Call policy providers with your specific questions. Listen carefully, ask questions and write down the answers. Make sure you thoroughly understand. If you need to talk through your decision, you can speak to an advisor at the international office on your campus.
