Research Statement

My research focuses on an archaeological layer, consisting of an apparent trampled surface with charcoal and woodworking debris inclusions, discovered in a peat bog at L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland in 2018. Using plant macro-fossil analysis (the study of plant remains large enough to be seen by the naked eye), I will seek to understand how this layer and the bog area in which it is located were formed and transformed by human and natural processes, what this implies about the usage of the area and its preservation conditions, and ultimately how it relates to the broader cultural occupation sequence at L’Anse aux Meadows—including both its Norse and Indigenous dimensions.
