The advising process has been and continues to be an essential part of the first year student experience. Your role in this process should be guided by what you find comfortable and what your advisees require.
Some of them may wish to touch base with you after every class; others may feel they do not want or need your help and thus may not approach you.
Establishing contact with all your advisees is, however, important. Advisees should receive the information and the assistance they need to help them define and achieve their academic goals. Those who find themselves in academic difficulties may benefit if their adviser is aware of the problems, academic and otherwise, which led to them.
