Functional thin film materials make many technological innovations possible, from computer hard drives to solar cells. Many factors affect the performance of a material, including its composition and method of preparation. As of yet, there are relatively few theoretical guidelines that can help predict exactly how a material's properties will change as surface effects compete with familiar bulk behaviours. Therefore, experiments which investigate how preparation methods affect the magnetic, optical, and mechanical properties of thin solid films are very important from both scientific and technological standpoints.
Our research strategy -- focused on correlating synthesis conditions, crystal structures, crystallite morphologies, and physical properties -- is designed to provide answers to important questions about the formation and functionality of thin materials prepared by electrochemical techniques.
