SUBJECT: Chemical spill at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine
DATE: April 9, 2004

The St. Johnís Regional Fire Department was called to the Health Sciences Centre at around noon today after personnel detected a strong chemical odour in 5 South wing of the hospital. That portion of the hospital is adjacent to a medical school lab located on the fifth floor. A small amount of the liquid chemical 2-mercaptoethanol had been spilled in a lab where a student was working. All of the patients in the 5 South wing, with the exception of the special care unit, were moved to other parts of the hospital. There have been no reported injuries. The spill is being cleaned by the Fire Department and the wing is expected to reopen later this afternoon.
