REF NO.: 90
Memorial Universitys Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Sciences Department of Earth Sciences will host a joint public open house on Saturday, March 9, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. as part of National Engineering and Geoscience Month.
The family-friendly event will take place on Memorials St. Johns campus and will include information booths, guided tours of working laboratories, demonstrations and prize giveaways. Visitors can also learn about the academic programs and research activities that each has to offer.
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences open house will begin in the main foyer of the S.J. Carew building with information booths on several interesting engineering-related topics. The whole family can enjoy tours of working laboratories with ocean gliders, a rescue craft simulator, a ride on a 58-metre towing tank and much more. The kids will want to meet the humanoid robot, Nao, who will dance with them and tell them about the cool world of engineering.
Interested members of the public can visit www.engr.mun.ca for a full list of the displays, demonstrations and activities that are being held as part of the event.
The Department of Earth Sciences open house will begin in the fourth floor foyer of the Alexander Murray building (one level above street level). Faculty and students will offer tours of several laboratories used for geochemical research, including radiogenic and stable isotopes and experimental geochemistry. Visitors will see how these analytical tools are used to solve geological problems and will have an opportunity to see how synthetic minerals, including gems such as rubies and emeralds, can be grown in the laboratory.
Admission is free and there is free parking in lot 16A, west of the University Centre. There will be limited cafeteria service in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science cafeteria, located on the main floor, S.J. Carew building.
Representatives from the media are invited to attend.
