REF NO.: 131
|SUBJECT:||Marine Institute to host a public forum on sustainable aquaculture|
|DATE:||Feb. 9, 2004|
As part of Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Week, the public is invited to attend a public forum on Sustainable Aquaculture: The Future of Aquatic Food Production at the Marine Institute's Hampton Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m.
Recent public interest has focused interest in sustainable aquatic farming as a means for future food production in Canadian and global coastal areas. The United Nations recognizes aquaculture as the fastest growing food production sector globally, and a sector which holds much promise for food security, safety and environmental sustainability.
Recent media surrounding food safety and environmental integrity of aquaculture has led to some confusion among consumers and the public. The current forum will present a panel of experts for advice and discussions with the public on the benefits of sustainable aquaculture in Newfoundland and elsewhere. The panel includes Yves Bastein, commissioner for Aquaculture Development, Dr. Tor Horsberg, Norwegian School of Veterinary Sciences, Norway, Peter Marshall, IFQC, Ireland, and David Rideout with the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance.
