Dr. Robert Paine, professor emeritus of Anthropology at Memorial University, will give a public lecture on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004. The title of his lecture is Slippery Slopes: Saami (Lapp) Skis - a Six Thousand Year Story. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room A-1043, located in the Arts Administration Building on Memorial University's St. John's campus. This event is sponsored by the Avalon Nordic Ski Club and the Department of Anthropology, Memorial University. Dr. Paine worked for many years as an anthropologist with the Lapp or Saami people of Norway. Skis were essential technology in the reindeer-herding Saami culture. His talk will include reminiscences of his time living with the Saami in the 1950s, when he and his hosts wore reindeer hide moccasins and attached their feet to their skis using thongs.
